Free Google Apps for Business Service Withdrawn

The free version of Google Apps for Business is being withdrawn by Google. It’s important to note that Google is not changing the services for existing users. If you have a free account then it will remain exactly as it is.

We love Google Apps for Business

In making the change Google suggest that the free version is not suitable for businesses or individuals, stating:

Businesses quickly outgrow the basic version and want things like 24/7 customer support and larger inboxes. Similarly, consumers often have to wait to get new features while we make them business-ready.

We are not sure if we agree wholeheartedly with Google’s opinion. There are plenty of small businesses out there with less than 10 users (the free version limit after it was cut from 50). That said, the Business edition starts at just £2.75pm per user.

It comes with full Outlook integration, a massive 25gb of storage and 24/7 support, all mounted on one of the most robust infrastructures in the world. It strikes a nice balance between having your own infrastructure (and buying servers, IT staff and all that goes with it) and the simple, low-cost email services available from any hosting company. Whilst it may have a higher ticket price than a low-cost hosted service, the infrastructure of the Google Apps service and all that goes with it makes it, in our opinion, better value (but not as much better as when it was free!).
